The hits from 2020 just keep on coming! An ice storm rolled into Oklahoma City last Monday (October 26th). The prediction was brutal as many trees still had their leaves. The weight of the ice on the leaves would mean broken limbs and fallen trees. It would also mean power outages. We lost our power… Continue reading Book Review by Candlelight

Do You Potter?
Key Concept #1: ‘Lifelong learner’ is a term I’ve referenced in previous blog posts. I claim that character trait as my own. I’ve always read parenting magazines and books – from the time my kids were babies, on to toddlers, pre-teens, teens, college, and now young adults. Yes, there are some innate aspects to parenting,… Continue reading Do You Potter?
Planning For A Few Pops of Color
West side of guest house Guest House Our property naturally slopes. In some places, the slope has been exaggerated. One such place is on the west side of our guest house. The hill is rather dramatic. It’s a difficult area to cut with a lawnmower. And at the bottom of the hill resides Brad’s salsa garden. We decided… Continue reading Planning For A Few Pops of Color
My Man Got His Mojo Back
Happy Father’s Day to all the dads in my life. I can readily recognize that navigating manhood is a difficult task. As a woman, I support my husband as a wife – but also as the father of my children. I know that my kids are watching his every move. Based on Brad’s actions, my… Continue reading My Man Got His Mojo Back
Asparagus
Last year when I told my mother that I was planting a strawberry patch, she sent me an article and said I should consider intermingling the strawberries with asparagus. Well, asparagus really wasn’t on my to-do list and I didn’t want to spend the time researching it. I was already down the road three steps… Continue reading Asparagus
Side Project: Firewood
Brad loves a fireplace, and prefers wood-burning to gas. Our house has that. The previous owners left a disheveled stack of wood which we haphazardly added to when we had a few trees taken down two years ago. The area was just a mess but didn’t seem to warrant my attention until this summer. Mainly,… Continue reading Side Project: Firewood
Planting Tea
In a recent blog, I reviewed a couple of books and commented that I was inspired by the long-term garden cultivating efforts of these authors. Inspired? Yes. But in hindsight, these authors are not what spurred me to action. I was already on that path. Their life journeys were just a reminder of what I… Continue reading Planting Tea
Serendipity
Gardens are cultivated over a period of time. Sure, given an unlimited budget you may be able to install a complete garden in a short period of time. But even in that event, the plants are likely to be immature and lack the overall effect of a space cultivated over time. In most cases, gardens are created one project at a time.
10 Things I Learned Today
1 - The end of the glass tax in England helped spur the greenhouse movement. 2 - The first written account of composting appears on clay tablets around 2300 BC. 3 - Charcoal briquettes are linked to Henry Ford and the wood used to build Model Ts. 4 - The first scarecrows were people. 5… Continue reading 10 Things I Learned Today
New Year’s Resolution #4
I am happy to report that one New Year’s Resolution is complete: I have officially planted my strawberry patch! The weather in Oklahoma is always erratic. You plan for that as best you can, but March and April were difficult. It seems that every weekend was cold and/or rainy. And there is always the wind!… Continue reading New Year’s Resolution #4
